Flashing light usage decreased as penalties increased
With the law that came into effect at the end of 2024, penalties for those using vehicles with flashing lights increased. Following this, the use of vehicles with flashing lights also began to decrease.

Efforts to prevent traffic violations and accidents have begun to yield results.
With the law enacted at the end of 2024, sanctions such as increasing fines for vehicle violations with flashing lights, banning the vehicle from traffic for 60 days and confiscation of the driver’s license for 60 days came into force.
However, after the fine increased to 270 thousand liras, the use of vehicles with flashing lights started to decrease.
According to the report of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, while 167 thousand 559 criminal proceedings were carried out between 2023 and 2024, only 957 criminal proceedings were carried out in the five months after the new penalties.
80 PERCENT DECREASE
Due to deterrent penalties, the rate of criminal proceedings decreased by 80 percent.

The report on traffic accidents prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs regarding the bill to increase traffic fines also included information that the number of deaths resulting from traffic accidents in the last five years was 28,356.
This figure is more than double the number of deaths caused by crimes against public safety in the last five years.
In the last five years, the total number of deaths due to reasons such as intentional homicide, substance-related deaths, and terrorism-related deaths was 11,717.
47 PERCENT OF DEATHS ARE DUE TO SPEED VIOLATIONS
According to the news in the Türkiye newspaper; 6,351 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2024 alone. More than 47 percent of these deaths were caused by speed violations.
While shearing comes second with 17 percent, nearly 30 thousand accidents occurred due to rear-end collisions in 2024 and 588 people lost their lives in these accidents.
1,315 people died in traffic accidents caused by changing lanes without obeying rules such as swerving.
1.4 MILLION SEAT BELTS WERE PUT ON, 1 MILLION DRIVERS WERE PENALIZED FOR MOBILE PHONE USE
More than one million drivers were given a fine of 2,168 lira for using a mobile phone while driving. Also in 2024, 6,710 traffic accidents occurred due to red light violations. Nearly two million red light violation fines were issued.
The number of deaths in traffic accidents due to red light violations was 137 in 2024. In 2024, 289 thousand penalties were imposed for drunk driving. The number of penalties for driving under the influence of drugs approached 5 thousand. 1.4 million penalties were imposed for not using seat belts.
